Economic Development

The Mount Horeb area is home to hundreds of businesses that represent area service, professional, trades, retail and tourism businesses.  Mount Horeb is developing a new comprehensive development plan following the Smart Growth 2020 Planning Guideline.  The plan encourages the expansion of existing business and the attraction of new business along Business Highway ID, Mount Horeb’s historic district downtown and other possible areas.  With the assistance of a Dane County Block Development Grant, Mount Horeb developed an extensive Downtown Improvement Plan.

Mount Horeb enjoys a strong collaborative public-private sector partnership dedicated to economic development.  The Village’s Economic Development & Tourism Committee works closely with developers, businesses and community leaders to enhance the employment and tax base, encourage business growth that contributes to all sectors of the economy, and coordinate development activities with local government.  The Committee has been instrumental in downtown improvement with a focus on Mount Horeb’s historic downtown and the Military Ridge Bike Trail.

The village also has an active Business Park Committee that has recently focused on expanding business development by adding a TIF district and business park acreage to Mount Horeb’s east side, the gateway to the community.

Both committees include members from Mount Horeb’s business community, the Village of Mount Horeb and the Mount Horeb Area Chamber of Commerce.

Mount Horeb is conveniently located in south central Wisconsin on State Highway 18-151, just 16 miles southwest of Madison and is connected by a divided four-lane highway to Dubuque.  This important arterial roadway connects the Mount Horeb-Madison area with Wisconsin’s highly traveled Interstate 90/94.  The I 90/94 system provides convenient access to major cities such as Chicago, Dubuque, Minneapolis and Milwaukee.

Forty–four regional and national motor freight carriers plus parcel services such as UPS, Federal Express, Airborne Express, Emery Worldwide and Purolator Courier serve the metropolitan area.

Dane County Regional Airport and nearby Truax Field, which comprise the state’s second largest airport facility, are located just 25 miles east of Mount Horeb.  The airport has more than 100 scheduled arrivals and departures daily.   Several commercial airlines serve the airport, as well as two private air services and four air cargo companies.  In addition to the Dane County airport, private airports in nearby Sauk City/Prairie du Sac, Middleton and Verona also serve the Mount Horeb area.
